Phones make excellent cameras until something gets hot

The sensor is not the problem. A phone will out-shoot most dedicated webcams. The problem is what happens on hour three.

Point a recent phone at a scene. It beats almost any webcam you can buy. Better sensor, better processing, better low light. For a fixed desk shot it is close to free quality.

The trouble starts when the shot has to last.

Wired wins, and it is not close

Wireless phone-camera apps work. They also add delay you cannot remove. And a failure mode you cannot predict.

Wired paths land near 50 to 70 ms round trip. That is fine for anything interactive. USB-C capture apps qualify, so does Continuity Camera after its handshake, so does NDI over a wired bridge. Pick one and the latency question closes.

Continuity Camera is free and narrow

Apple gives Mac users Continuity Camera free. Any iPhone XR or newer on iOS 16 or later. Paired with a Mac on Ventura or later. It shows up as a webcam on its own.

Apple built it into the system, so it reaches things third-party apps cannot. It is also Mac only. On Windows you are buying an app.

The constraint nobody lists

Heat. A phone encoding video while charging is doing two hot things at once, in a sealed glass box, often in a case. Reviewers who tested for ten minutes never met this.

Where the pipeline actually breaks

Long sessions surface the same short list.

What to do about it

Take the case off. Keep air moving over the back. Set exposure and white balance by hand. Stop the phone reprocessing every frame. Lock resolution to what you send. Shooting 4K to publish 1080p just makes heat.

Then run it for a full session before you trust it in one. Ten minutes proves nothing. Hour three is when it matters.
